The historic photograph (A), which was taken in about 1850, represents a healthy oak barren with scattered oak grubs within a matrix of graminoids. Following 70 yr of fire suppression (B), the oak grubs have succeeded to coppiced oak trees with a ground layer dominated by Carex pensylvanica. Note the dominant outcrop in the upper left corner of each photograph for reference; the scale and angle differ slightly in each picture.
