APPENDIX 1. Forest value chains
The term value chain is
useful to understand the activities that bring a product from the forest, to
production and processing, through final delivery to consumers, and ultimately,
disposal (Kaplinsky and Morris 2000). Value chain analysis is a conceptual framework for
mapping and categorizing the economic, social, and also environmental processes,
understanding how and where enterprises and institutions are positioned in them,
and identifying opportunities and possible leverage points for improvement. It
encompasses the organization, coordination, equity, power relationships,
linkages, and governance between organizations and actors.
