This photo of an unmanaged Jeffrey pine-mixed conifer forest was taken 3 yr after a 2003 wildfire in northern Sierra San Pedro Martir (SSPM), northwestern Mexico, the first fire in this area in several decades. Observations of average forest stand characteristics, i.e., tree and snag density, basal area, fuel loads, are uncommon in these forests. This spatial heterogeneity is due to recurring disturbances such as fire, which influence landscape patterns.
